Molly is the name given to one of the fallen human's friends. Through recklessness or disregard for their own safety, Molly jumped into the underground to find their friend, fearing the worst had happened to them.

Molly possesses the Human soul known as perseverance, a trait tied to relentlessness and burdening impossible odds. It should be noted that this is different from freedom, however. The former is an immovable object, the latter is an unstoppable force. Perseverance uses a battering ram to break down a door until the ram breaks, then stops to try something else. Freedom tries everything else, including said key.

It should be noted that Molly is quite stubborn in their judgements to an insufferable degree. Once a path has been chosen, Molly only tries something else when it truly has consequences. She'll throw herself at a door until she's exhausted, or decide to take punches until she can hardly stand. Part of this friction is why the Underground is so different than other adventures, to her at least.

Relationships

Rin
Molly and Rin have been friends for as long as they can remember. They initially started out as rivals, but their love for the occult has given them a Kris/Susie friendship dynamic if anything else.
Molly and Ben have a complicated relationship. Despite being closer friends prior to meeting Rin, they started drifting when Ben's respect for authority clashed with Molly's exploration of the Manor.
Everett
Molly and Everett are an unstable duo, especially with the tension between them. Molly's stubbornness and Ev's lack of planning often causes problems. And combined with Rin's provocations, their arguments almost always end in them brawling.
Chara
Molly and Chara have an... interesting relationship. Molly's distrust of ghosts following the Manor incident made initial judgements of the fallen human negative at best. Though after being protected from a certain sibling, their judgements began shifting.
Sabel
Molly and Sabel would go how you'd expect it to. I don't know much about UT: Violet (much like other color-related projects) but I can see some major tension arising from Sabel's skiddish attitude and Molly's stubborn attitude.

Trivia

  • Prior to the events of Drealturne, Molly had explored a haunted Manor near Mt. Naffit's border at the behest of Ben. She had nearly been ghostified by the manor's curse, but through the expulsion of the Void King was Molly and the others set free.
  • In Undertale: Violet, Molly is described as taking various equipment like swords and lanterns with her to the Underground. Though most of them are broken because of the fall, they're directly taken from the Manor.
  • If a genocide route were to occur, Molly would probably have the most difficult time compared to other Humans, being that their strategy is "wittling your opponent until they fall." Molly would deliberately prolong the battle to exhaust the opponent rather than killing them outright, which gives Monsterkind more time to evacuate and/or prepare against her.
  • Molly is not very stable-minded, so the mentality of "run-or-die-trying" brought about by Flowey would force Molly to compartmentalize her stress as a twisted form of entertainment. This death of self shifts Molly's character into something resembling Clara Kraft's interpretation of Geno!Chara (see here).
  • Molly's least favorite Monster is Muffet, which is ironic considering she is the one who introduces the purple soul in the original game.

Appearances

  • DREALTURNE: VIOLET: A companion piece to Red. Molly debuts as the protagonist alongside the series here, despite Violet chronologically being made second.
  • DREALTURNE: RED: An AU fanfiction where Molly appears as a supporting character. She appears in the "Surface" supplementary chapters before heading into the Underground.

Miscellaneous

  • Molly's name is derived from the term "Molly Whop," an AAVE slang term meaning to "beat someone exceptionally hard." The similarities between Molly and Molli Pop (from Tako Boy Studios' Candies N' Curses) is a coincidence.
  • Originally Molly was designed as being the Bravery soul, though it was changed to Perseverance as I thought Molly's decline into genocide would make a nice contrast to Rin's pacifism.
